“So, it’s Case C,” observed Gabrielle Rosenthal calmly.

She was sitting with Lord Winterset in a control room inside another of the glass viewing compartments high above the stadium. As a government official, she’d commandeered the location for reasons of security and had radio access to all members of her team.

“Unless there’s no kidnapping at all,” observed Winterset.

“Case A, in other words. So now we just wait.”

“Remind me again how soon the award ceremony happens?” asked the MI6 chief.

“Usually about thirty minutes after the last performance. Look, they’re already setting up the stage, and the flags and so forth. I understand the skaters are given an opportunity to change into their casual Olympic track outfits; otherwise, they’d freeze out there in skimpy clothing.”

“So, what did you think of her performance?” asked Winterset.

“Beyond magnificent, obviously. It’s very difficult to believe this lovely young woman is also the violent killer who conquered Africa.”

“Yes, the two personas don’t mesh easily, do they? But evidently she’s been training in both ballet and martial arts since age five. I guess we’ve just seen the result of that.”

“We’ve seen the result of the ballet training,” noted the Swiss official. “If she’s taken to Al Khalik, she’ll have to use her martial arts skills and turn in a similar performance there.”

“Gabrielle, I’m deeply worried about her safety.”

Rosenthal looked at him closely. “You’ve grown fond of her, I take it, James.”

“The daughter I never had. Three grown sons. Never a daughter. Now I feel I have one, and she’s heading into terrible danger.”

“Any father would be concerned, knowing what’s about to happen.”

“I was not able to talk her out of it.”

“Is she going barehanded into Al Khalik if the kidnapping takes place? Will she have anything to work with?”

Winterset smiled. “Yes, a bit. Q’s team—that’s our technical services group—came up with a few tricks. Her Olympic tracksuit isn’t quite what it seems.”

“Do tell.”

“Concealed in its waistband are two knives, or I should say each is half a knife. That makes them flexible enough to bend in a waistband. But when they’re locked together, they become rigid and make a very serviceable fighting knife. She’s wearing an expensive watch with a few modifications. One of them is a diamond-crusted bezel that can spin at high speed and cut through most anything, certainly a pair of handcuffs or whatever they might choose to bind her with, as we’re assuming they’ll do. There’s another lock-picking piece of metal sewn into another part of the suit and a flexible thin steel wire she can use to strangle someone if she needs it. If she taps her right shoe in a certain way, a blade extends from the toe, and it’s poison tipped.”

“Good heavens, it does sound like something out of a James Bond movie,” exclaimed Rosenthal, clearly impressed.

“Quite,” agreed the spymaster. “Those weren’t entirely fictional, you know.”

“OK, then she won’t be empty-handed if they take her into Al Khalik.”

“Not at all, and the truth is, from what I know this young woman is capable of, she probably won’t need any of it.
